Your resume is the first impression you make on potential employers — and increasingly, it’s being read by software before any human sees it. Our free Resume Score Checker analyzes your resume against the same criteria that Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) use to filter candidates.

Step 1: Copy Your Resume Text

What Makes a Strong Resume in 2026?

The modern resume needs to satisfy two audiences: the ATS software that screens it and the human recruiter who eventually reads it. Here are the key elements our checker evaluates:

Complete Contact Information

Every resume must include your full name, professional email address, phone number, and LinkedIn profile. A location (city, state) helps with local job searches. Missing contact details are the #1 reason qualified candidates get filtered out.

Standard Section Headers

ATS systems look for standard headers like “Experience,” “Education,” “Skills,” and “Summary.” Creative alternatives like “My Journey” or “What I Bring” confuse the parser and can result in your experience being categorized incorrectly — or ignored entirely.

Action Verbs and Quantified Results

Strong resumes lead each bullet point with an action verb (“Led,” “Developed,” “Increased,” “Managed”) and include specific, measurable outcomes. Compare:

• Weak: “Responsible for managing the sales team”
• Strong: “Led a 12-person sales team, increasing quarterly revenue by 34% ($2.1M)”

Quantified achievements give recruiters concrete evidence of your impact and make your resume stand out.

Optimal Length

For most professionals, a one-page resume (400–700 words) is ideal. Senior professionals with 10+ years of experience can justify two pages (700–1,200 words). Anything shorter suggests insufficient experience; anything longer risks losing the reader’s attention.

ATS-Friendly Formatting

Keep your formatting simple: avoid tables, text boxes, headers/footers, images, and unusual fonts. Use standard bullet points (•) and clear date formats. Save as PDF or DOCX — these are the most universally parsed formats.
